SRS Treatment of Thousands of AVM Patients Over 33 Years

Matthias Radatz, MD

THE SPEAKER

Matthias Radatz, MD, FRCS, born in Berlin, following his A-levels at the renowned Heese Gymnasium, Dr Radatz studied Medicine at the “Free University of Berlin”. His Neurosurgical Training took place at major teaching institutions in Berlin, Krankenhaus Neukölln under Prof J Zierski and in Sheffield, Royal Hallamshire Hospital under Mr D Forster, Mr J Jakubowski, Mr RDE Battersby and Mr AA Kemeny (2/1994-6/1996). Here his interest in Gamma Knife Radiosurgery was established. After his return to Berlin he completed his neurosurgical training in May 1997, continuing as Facharzt under the late Prof. J Zierski. In 10/1997 he moved to the Neurosurgical Unit in Oxford, UK to further his training in particular in Functional Neurosurgery working with Prof Tipu Aziz and more complex Skull Base Surgery working with Mr C Adams and Mr R Kerr. He was appointed to his current position as consultant neurosurgeon in May 1999 in Sheffield.

He has been Lead Clinician for neurosurgery and Radiosurgery for many years, was appointed by the Yorkshire and Humber Deanery as Program Training Director and as well was a Member of the Specialist Advisory Committee (SAC) in neurosurgery for 7 years. Dr Radatz is a SBNS Council Member and is the President of the British Radiosurgery Society.

He is  the Senior Clinician of the National Centre for Gamma Knife Radiosurgery in Sheffield and Medical Director of the Thornbury Radiosurgery Centre. His treatment portfolio comprises more than 4000 treatments including specialist expertise in treating even rare conditions utilising all models of the Gamma Knife and witnessing its evolution over more than the last two decades.
